The PMT was hired to provide supervision and safety coordination services for the modernization of the Vendas Novas Railway Line, a key project for rail freight transport in Portugal, with an investment of approximately €120 million.
This large-scale project involves a wide range of technical interventions along the line, namely the replacement of the track superstructure, using multipurpose concrete sleepers and 60 E1 rails, as well as the extension, renovation, and modernization of several stations, including Muge, Agolada, Lavre, Vidigal, and other intermediate infrastructure.
The works also include around 17 kilometers of railway platform treatment, earthworks, drainage and slope reprofiling, the construction and rehabilitation of hydraulic crossings, metal pontoons, the closure of level crossings and the construction of grade-separated crossings, as well as the automation of existing level crossings.
The contract also includes work on railway signaling, cable trays, adaptation of fixed electric traction installations, implementation of RCT+TP systems, interventions in buildings and technical rooms, and the installation of GSM-R towers, which are essential for railway operation and safety.
The Vendas Novas Line runs for 69 kilometers, connecting Setil—with a connection to the Northern Line—to Vendas Novas, where it joins the Alentejo Line. This line is exclusively dedicated to freight transport and is one of the main freight railways in the North-South corridor, avoiding the Lisbon metropolitan area and overcoming significant capacity constraints.
This investment will increase demand by around 50%, enhance the reliability and safety of rail operations, reduce operating costs, and contribute significantly to reducing CO₂ emissions, estimated at around 500,000 tons by 2050.
PMT's participation in this project reinforces its experience in supervising large railway infrastructures, ensuring strict compliance with technical, safety, quality, and sustainability requirements in a highly complex project with national impact.
The contract for this project was signed on the 15th in Vendas Novas, at a ceremony attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), Miguel Cruz, the Vice-Chairman of IP, Carlos Fernandes, and the Mayor of Vendas Novas, Ricardo Videira.
