PMT was responsible for designing the renovation project for the former Rádio PAL building, located in the historic center of Palmela, in Largo de São João Batista. The intervention covered the development of the project in multiple areas, ensuring an integrated approach consistent with the heritage value of the building complex.

Context and objectives

Located in an area of high historical and cultural interest, the main objective of the project was to create a space for meeting, sharing knowledge, and developing ideas, aimed at promoting collaboration between various agents in the tourism and creative economy sectors.

The building was also designed to house the municipal project management team linked to tourism, allowing for close and coordinated work with local and regional economic agents.

Architectural concept and intervention

The building complex originally consisted of two separate buildings, to which an intermediate volume was later added to serve as studios for Rádio PAL. The project strategy involved restoring the original two buildings, highlighting their historical identity:

➡ the century-old house, with a direct connection to the São João Fountain;

➡ the support building, originally associated with agricultural functions.

The removal of the intermediate volume freed up a central courtyard, designed as a public space for exhibitions, cultural activities, meetings, and moments of sharing, reinforcing the connection between heritage, culture, and community.

This project reflects PMT's experience in urban and heritage rehabilitation, combining technical rigor, respect for historical identity, and the creation of contemporary spaces at the service of local development.
