PMT participated in the preparation of the technical project for the expansion and refurbishment of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at Santarém Hospital, an intervention that aimed to significantly improve conditions for psychiatric and child psychiatric care.

The project involved adding a new wing to the unused space in the hospital complex, allowing outpatient services to be housed in a functional, humanized building that is fully adapted to the needs of its users. The architectural proposal sought to move away from the traditional rigidity of hospital buildings, incorporating elements that promote well-being and comfort:

➡ Ample natural light;

➡ Interior courtyards;

➡ Fluid circulation with curved walls;

➡ Welcoming and less institutionalized environments.

These solutions contribute to creating a “healing space” closer to everyday life, reducing the psychological impact often associated with mental health facilities.

The organic design and use of curved shapes not only create more peaceful and humanized environments, but also allow for an effective response to the functional program defined for the service. The intervention reinforced the commitment to improving hospital infrastructure, functional efficiency, and promoting mental health in more inclusive and integrative environments.
